A play in 17 scenes. The unscrupulous 'Él' begins as a bank clerk, rising to become president and director general of the bank. He develops political ambitions and becomes a senator. An encounter with a woman and then with Equis, his alter-ego, remind him of more permanent values, though money and power remain his principal objectives. He becomes president of the Republic, but he is unpopular. Aspiring now to glory and a place in history, he tries to portray himself as a hero and 'saviour' of the nation, but the people won't accept him. He preaches progress and Revolution, "nuestra Revolución", with machine guns pointed at the audience.
