Spanish History
A play which takes up the character of Bellido Dolfos, 'whose name has been linked with treachery and infamy in Spain ever since the 11th century' (693). In the legend, Bellido attempted to free the city of Zamora from siege by murdering King Sancho II of Castile in 1072. In Segovia's play Bellido is presented as 'a noble and honourable man, motivated by the highest impulses' (698) (Robert R. La Du, 'The Dramatic Tradition of Bellido Dolfos', Hispania 46.4 (1963): 693-9).
