Subtitled a 'liturgical drama' in four acts. Sender writes in the prologue to the Destino edition that the play combines 'lo divino con lo humano, el humor con la tragedia y lo lírico con lo dramático' (14). An aged Don Juan returns to Seville to discover that his supposed daughter, Beatriz, is working in a brothel. Determined to rescue her from her fate, he is drawn into a web of old enmities which lead to his death and, eventually, to hers. The play draws heavily on the theological concerns of Tirso's Burlador de Sevilla, and emphasises links between sexuality, divinity and the macabre.
